What are CBD Capsules?

CBD Capsules are simply capsules containing Cannabidiol (CBD), a naturally occurring compound found in the Cannabis Sativa plant. It is one of over 100 known cannabinoids and one of the most abundant found within the plant. Unlike the other prominent cannabinoid in cannabis, THC, CBD is non-intoxicating.

CBD Capsules are created by first extracting cannabidiol from industrial hemp, a variety of cannabis that is high in CBD and low in THC. The resulting extract can then be further refined, if necessary, to remove THC or create CBD isolate. After that is complete the CBD extract is emulsified into carrier oil such as coconut oil (MCT) and placed inside a capsule.

Benefits of CBD Capsules

Administering CBD orally in the form of capsules offers many benefits. Firstly they are convenient and an accurate way to measure your daily dosage. In addition to this they are tasteless and therefore perfect for those averse to the taste of CBD oil.

Bio-availability of CBD Capsules

As capsules are swallowed, they will inevitably pass through your digestive and metabolic systems before entering the bloodstream which can reduce CBD’s bio-availability and increase the time taken to take effect.

Studies have found however, that consuming CBD with fatty acids can help bypass first pass metabolism in the liver increasing the amount of CBD absorbed. Coconut oil is ideal for this due to its abundance of Medium Chain Triglycerides. MCT are smaller fat molecules which are easily absorbed by the body through the intestinal walls, bypassing the liver in a process known as intestinal lymphatic transport therefore maximising the bio-availability of CBD. For this reason, capsules containing carrier oil such as MCT are likely much more bio-available than their counterparts.

Which capsules are available?

CBD Capsules are available in various formats including regular extract containing capsules, flower containing capsules, soft gels, and chew-able capsules. Of course, as with most CBD products, capsules can contain all types of extract including full spectrum, broad spectrum and CBD isolate.

Full Spectrum CBD Capsules

Capsules made from full spectrum extracts will retain more of the natural compounds within the hemp plant. This includes cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, essential fatty acids, vitamins and other beneficial co-factors. The retention of these compounds may provide synergistic effects known as the entourage effect. This may improve the efficacy of any CBD product. Please also note that full spectrum CBD capsules may contain traces of THC albeit within the UK legal limit. Some of our best selling CBD capsules include CBD Brothes Blue Edition Capsules and Love CBD Entourage Capsules.

Broad Spectrum CBD Capsules

Broad spectrum CBD extract will contain a ‘broad spectrum’ of cannabinoids however with the THC removed. THC is usually removed through distillation which results in an extract known as CBD distillate. This distillate is brimming with active compounds and cannabinoids but without any THC. This makes this option ideal for consumers that wish to introduce CBD into their health regime but do not wish to consume any THC.

CBD Isolate Capsules

CBD Isolate is a virtually odourless, white powder that contains only >99% pure cannabidiol (CBD). It is effectively CBD as an isolated molecule. This means it will not provide any of the benefits of the entourage effect due to the absence of the accompanying molecules. That said however, there is some incredible CBD isolate available and it contains no THC. This makes CBD isolate capsules a viable option for someone looking to avoid consuming THC.

Buying CBD Capsules

There are numerous factors to consider when purchasing CBD Capsules. First and foremost you want to ensure you are buying a quality, safe and effective product. Second you need to decide which product matches your dosing requirements and any other preferences. We know it can be daunting at first which is why we put together the below information to help you make an informed decision.

Which CBD Capsules are right for me?

Lack of regulation in the UK CBD market has seen may sub-par products plague an otherwise strong industry. With that said, we have taken the liberty of collating the below list to help you make an informed buying decision. Here’s what to look out for when purchasing CBD Capsules:

Lab Reports

Firstly it is imperative to ensure your any CBD products you buy have been tested by an independent third party. To verify this you should be able to view a lab report or ceritificate of analysis (COA) on the company’s website. This will break down the cannabinoid content including CBD and also demonstrate that the product is safe and free of contaminants. Moreover it will allow you to verify that the product contains the amount of CBD stated on the label.

At Hemptations you can view lab reports for all of our products in the description section on the product page. Alternatively you can visit our CBD lab report database to view or download lab reports for all our products. In addition we have even broken down the CBD and THC content of each product for you in a table.

Customer Feedback

Another important aspect to consider when purchasing any CBD product is customer feedback. Reputable CBD brands will have easy to find reviews on platforms like TrustpilotGoogle and Facebook. This will allow you to see how other consumers are faring with any particular brands products and service. This is one of the key aspects we look at when choosing our partners. All of the brands we offer have strong reputations as the most trusted brands available worldwide.

Quality Standards

Look for CBD that is manufactured by a company with internationally recognised quality certification such as ISO or GMP. This proves the brand is formulating products under rigorously controlled conditions. Moreover it ensures the products are of the highest quality and are safe.

Extraction Methods

It is important to consider how the CBD was extracted as this can affect the quality of the product. The cleanest way of extracting CBD is using supercritical co2. Another reliable extraction method is ethanol extraction.

Trade Association

Bodies like The Cannabis Trades Association (CTA) and Cannapro review members for the quality of their products, trading standards and compliance. Brands with membership of these trade associations are usually reputable. Their products should be safe and of high quality. Many of the brands we work with are members of the CTA and other trade bodies therefore you can rest assured you are buying quality products when purchasing from us.

Cost

The cost of CBD Capsules can vary considerably depending on the quality of the extract used to make them and the conditions they are made under. With many capsules coming in doses of 10mg it is useful to work out the cost of each 10mg serving to determine value.

For example our Endoca Raw CBD Oil Capsules cost £26 for a total of 300mg CBD therefore each 10mg dose costs approximately £0.87. The UK industry average cost for a 10mg dose of CBD ranges from £0.50 to £1.00. However you should expect to be closer to the more expensive end for higher grade products.

Strength

CBD Capsules are available in a range of different strengths starting from 5mg CBD per cap. The strength is normally printed onto the box in milligrams (mg) per capsule. Most capsules offer a potency of around 10-20mg CBD per dose with some brands offering options of 25mg or more.

There is currently no recommended dose for any CBD product. This is not only due to lack of research but also as CBD affects each individual differently depending on a multitude of factors. You can learn more about what to consider when dosing CBD in our dosage guide.

According to the FSA we should take no more than 70mg CBD each day unless under medical direction. The science behind this however, is unconvincing. That said, it is always best to begin taking a low dose of CBD at first and monitor how the body responds. You can then slowly up-titrate from there if and as required.

FAQs

Are CBD Capsules suitable for vegetarians?

Look out for capsules made out of plant fibres such as HPMC as opposed to gelatin based capsules.

Are CBD Capsules legal?

Yes CBD capsules are absolutely legal in the UK providing they contain no more than 1mg THC per container. THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) is the compound found within cannabis that is responsible for making one high. While THC is found in small quantities in our full spectrum products it is never enough to impair. All products sold by Hemptations are lab tested for quality assurance to verify compliance with THC law.
